The original SMOK Novo is considered to be one of the best and most successful pod systems on the market, but SMOK clearly isn’t done innovating as the newly released SMOK Novo 2 features upgrades on the original. While the design of the SMOK Novo 2 is identical to the original, the updated device aims to address some of the operational issues seen in the SMOK Novo, while preserving the same vape quality enjoyed in the original. In this article, we’ll explore some of the new changes made to the SMOK Novo 2 and hopefully help you decide which device is best for you.
What’s New?
While the SMOK Novo 2 does come with a host of features, the most immediate and compelling is the new increased battery size. While the original SMOK Novo came packed with a respectable 450mAh battery, the SMOK Novo 2 features a generous 800mAh battery in the same compact body. This increase in battery size should allow the SMOK Novo 2 to function for an entire day, without requiring a charge, something the SMOK Novo struggled with. While this will depend on how much you vape and for how long, SMOK claims the Novo 2 can be vaped for three full days after being fully charged.
Along with the battery, SMOK has decided to address the issues regarding the draw activation of the SMOK Novo. For those that never had to deal with this issue, some users found that the draw activation sensor would occasionally fail to recognize and inhale or would just stop working all together. This was one of the first things SMOK addressed with the Novo 2 and led SMOK to completely redesign the system. In the Novo 2, the sensor is featured on the side of the u-shaped airflow intake and now extends from the battery contact plane to avoid contactless suction. The improved draw activation sensor has already worked wonders on the Novo 2 and no incidents involving the sensor have been brought up.
While the battery and sensor top the list of SMOK Novo 2 upgrades, the device also features a host of design alterations that help the device run properly and last longer. First, is a unique groove featured on the section in which the pod connects to the battery. These grooves help solve any issues with condensation and allow moisture trapped in the space to dissipate without issue.
The Novo 2 also includes a new LED indicator to address the criticism of the Novo, which was slammed for having a lack of indication of the battery level. As with the sensor, to implement this upgrade SMOK went back to the drawing board. On the Novo 2, SMOK implemented a small light indicator on the top of the device which shines when vaping or charging. On the Novo 2, a green light signifies 70% or more, orange when between 30-70%, and red when 30% or below. This may be a small change, but it makes a world of difference when using the device on the go.
Novo 2 Capabilities
Looking first at power range, the SMOK Novo 2 features a considerable upgrade over the original SMOK Novo. While the original Novo outputted 10-16W, the Novo 2 features ranges from 6W to 25W. This increased range comes from the improved motherboard structure and optimized charging port, allowing the Novo 2 to offer a better combination of high performance and battery life.
When considering the capabilities of the Novo 2, it’s important to also mention the airflow on the device. Like the Novo, it is in no way adjustable and is actually pulled in the same way. The Novo 2 — like the Novo — draws air in through airflow slots on both sides of the pod and pulls it upwards through the coil. Through our testing, we’ve found the Novo 2 to be somewhat more airy than the Novo, but still far less than the SMOK Nord.
What About the Pods?
While the wattage range of the Novo 2 is much larger than the Novo, its ability to produce cloud and flavour is all dependent on the pod you choose to use. With the Novo 2, users can choose from various pods in the Novo Pod Family, as well as three brand new specific Novo 2 pods.
The three new pods for the Novo 2 include:
- Novo 2 Mesh 1.0 Ohm Pod: This coil offers a large heating area that provides longer-lasting coils and thick clouds.
- Novo 2 DC 1.4 Ohm MTL Pod: This dual coil pod delivers a smooth throat hit and a pure taste. This coil is ideal for MTL vaping.
- Novo 2 Quartz Coil Pod: This is the first quartz coil in a pod system and allows for fast heat times and intense vapor.
Conclusions
Even if you’re already happy with your Novo there really isn’t any reason to not pick up a Novo 2. It is fundamentally better than the Novo in every way and offers more battery, an improved sensor, and various additional upgrades. All these upgrades help the device perform at an impressive rate, all while keeping the same slim and portable package seen in the original SMOK Novo.
