What Mode Should I Use On My Vape? - 180 Smoke

What Mode Should I Use On My Vape?

Aug 30, 2018 | E-cigarette Batteries, E-cigarette/Vape Kits, How-to Guides, Vaping Wiki

If you’re new to vaping, or new to vaping with a multi-setting device, it can be a bit intimidating to navigate your way through all of the features available for your mod.

So to make your life a bit easier, we’ve broken down each setting and when to use it so that you can get to vaping how you want to, faster. Before looking at the settings, you’ll want to figure out what kind of wire your coils are made with. That material will dictate the setting you should be using for best results.

Wattage/Voltage (Power Mode)

Appropriate Wire Materials: Kanthal, Stainless Steel (SS), NiChrome (NiCr)

Wattage and Voltage Mode, also referred to as Power Mode, is the most common mod setting for vapers because of its simplicity and effectiveness.

With Power Mode, you will be setting the amount of total power going directly to the coil. Wattage (likely the most used setting among vapers) is the unit used to express power per second, while voltage refers to the force of that power.

The majority of factory-produced coils are made with kanthal wire, so this is why Power Mode tends to be used most often. However, stainless steel and nichrome coils can also be used in Power Mode.

Temperature Control Mode (TC Mode)

Rather than measuring the amount of power going to your coil, Temperature Control Mode (or TC Mode) allows you to set the exact temperature that you want your coils to heat to. This means that you’ll be getting an even heating every time you fire your device, giving you more control over your vaping experience, and limiting the risk of burning your wick.

Every wire compatible with Temperature Control Mode will require its own setting, since each metal responds differently to heat. As mentioned earlier, you’ll want to make sure you know exactly which type of metal is used in your coils so that you can correctly set your mod’s mode.

Nickel Mode (Ni Mode)

Appropriate Wire Materials: Nickel (Ni)

Nickel Mode (or Ni Mode) is used only for nickel wire. Nickel is revered for its rapid temperature ramp-up, but since it is a softer metal than others, it can be difficult coil with. You should always avoid dry burning nickel coils because this will oxidize the metal, ruining the wire. Vapers with nickel allergies or sensitivities may not be able to use nickel coils, as it can spur adverse reactions.

Titanium Mode (Ti Mode)

Appropriate Wire Materials: Titanium (Ti)

Titanium Mode (or Ti Mode) is a specific mode only to be used with titanium wire. Like nickel, titanium boasts a quick heat ramp-up, but does not cause allergic reactions in its users. However, titanium does oxidize when dry heated, so you’ll want to make sure not to fire your coils before they are wet.

Stainless Steel Mode (SS Mode)

Appropriate Wire Materials: Stainless Steel (SS)

Stainless Steel Mode (or SS Mode) was created for use with stainless steel wire. Stainless steel is arguably the most versatile of coiling materials, as its heating properties allow it to be compatible with Power Mode and SS Temperature Control Mode. It shares nickel and titanium’s fast ramp-up speed, but does not oxidize when dry burned, giving you more ability to adjust your coils when they’re heated. Stainless steel is also not known to cause any adverse allergic reactions.

Bypass Mode

Although it isn’t used by very many vapers, Bypass Mode gives you the ability to fire your device with the level of raw power available in your batteries. This means that you can go beyond the allowances of traditional Power Mode or Temperature Control Mode settings, enabling you to build coils at lower resistances than those settings permit. Since Bypass Mode has no cap on wattage, voltage, or temperature, this setting is not recommended for beginners, as it could easily burn your wick and ruin your coils.

Memory Modes (M1, M2, M3)

Many advanced mods will have specific modes reserved for memory settings, which is essentially several different modes where the device remembers your setting for easy access. These modes are normally referred to as Memory Modes, signified by the abbreviations M1, M2, M3, and so on, depending on the number of Memory Modes your mod allows. Memory Modes are great if you are frequently changing between different types of tanks and want a convenient way to save those settings and switch between them without any hassle.

How Do I Change Modes?

Most mods will allow you to change between modes by pressing the fire button three times rapidly, and then either scrolling through using three more clicks of the fire button, or using the + and – buttons. But, depending on the manufacturer, some mods may have a different sequence of buttons to switch modes, like holding down a specific button for a particular amount of time. Be sure to consult the mod’s user manual for a more accurate guide to switching modes.
